What We’re Doing And How You Can Help

It’s right in our mission statement: “harnessing the power of music to help children in need” and our tip to Nepal is exactly how we’re putting our mission into action. You can now be a part of our trip by making a donation online so we can provide access to music and art through group instruction in a safe and understanding environment.

Helen Nightengale, the foundation’s vice president and co-founder, put it best when she explained to a reporter why working with music in a therapeutic way will make a difference for these children.

The intent is not to teach these children how to make music, but instead to use music and art to teach them how to find their voices and access their feelings through those mediums to help themselves cope better with whatever their conflicts and challenges may be.

Our Goals

Our program specialists have been hard at work over the past several months crafting a focused set of program objectives during our time in Bhaktapur and Baglung to use music as a therapeutic tool in order to enhance the lives of the children and families we’re working with. These goals include:

  • Promote wellness
  • Manage stress
  • Express Feelings
  • Improve communication
  • Establish positive communication between different cultures.
  • Provide a safe, structured, and creative learning environment for children.
  • Empower children to make creative decisions and problem solve.
  • Empower children to take risks in a creative realm.
  • Create a community in which positive reinforcement and praise is the primary way of communicating.

How It Gets Done

All lesson plans will have a scaffolding effect for learning, starting with basic principles and building on them. Using step by step instructive patterns and keeping the environment structured, the participants will experience a safe and controlled environment in which they may experiment with music and art.

We will only use positive reinforcement and refrain from negative or degrading comments toward participants.  Participants will be asked to refrain from teasing or negative talk while in session.  The goal is to make the learning environment a positive experience and encourage non-violence and positive communication.  Facilitators are prepared to mitigate disagreements in a positive way.  Through creating a safe environment for participants to work they may explore feelings, and have a sense of control over life through successful experiences, and learn to resolve conflicts leading to stronger relationships.
